보이지 않는 것들을 따라가는 여행, 그리고 기쁨 - 시각장애인들과 함께한 호주 시드니 여행! - A Journey Following the Unseen, and the Joy Therein - Traveling in Sydney with the Visually impaired
최근, 저는 한국에서 온 특별한 방문객들과 며칠을 보냈습니다. 그들은 바로 시각장애를 가진 두 커플이었고, 저는 그들의 시드니 여행 가이드를 맡았습니다. 처음 이들과의 여정을 시작할 때, '시각장애인도 관광을 할 수 있을까?'라는 의문을 가졌고 비록 볼 수는 없지만 만지고 느끼면서 경험을 해 나아가는 4분을 보며 많은 것을 느꼈습니다.
이 중 두사람은 완전히 볼 수 없었고, 다른 두 사람은 저시력으로, 겨우 형태와 빛 정도만 구분할 수 있었습니다. 그중에서도 민규 씨는 형태를 가장 잘 구분할 수 있었고, 그가 앞장서는 형태로, 나머지 셋은 서로를 의지하며 그를 따랐습니다. 저는 그 앞에서 안내하며, 민규 씨와 나머지 세 사람이 안전하게 걸을 수 있도록 도왔습니다.
예상대로 일반여행과는 완전히 달랐습니다. 멋진 해변가를 가도 맑은 공기와 고운모래를 먼저 체험하시고 음식을 먹기 전 어떤 메뉴가 있는지 하나하나 먼저 설명을 해드리고 길을 걸을 때 앞에 약간의 장애물이 있으면 미리 말씀을 드려야 하는 등등의 새로운 형태의 여행이었습니다.
여행에 나선 그들의 이유는 무엇일까요? 대부분 후천적 시각장애인인 이들은, 볼 수 있을때는 여행을 많이 해보지 못했습니다. 그러나 시각을 잃은 후, 시간적 여유가 생기고 우연히 함께한 일본 여행이 그들에게 큰 즐거움을 주었습니다. 이후, 매년 다른 나라를 여행하는 것이 그들의 버킷리스트가 되었고, 이번 여정의 목적지는 호주의 시드니였습니다.
보이지 않는 세상을 믿고 따르는 이들의 모습은 보이지 않는 주님을 믿고 따르는 믿음의 여정과도 같았습니다. 이러한 모습에서 큰 은혜를 느꼈습니다. 함께 가이드를 나눠서 맡아주신 목사님께서 이분들과 여정을 함께하시며 고린도 후서 5:7 - "이는 우리가 믿음으로 행하고 보는 것으로 행하지 아니함이로라"의 말씀을 나눠주셨으며 저도 바로 이 말씀에 동의를 했습니다.
이분들의 호주에서의 경험은 또한 매우 긍정적이었습니다. 이곳에서는 장애를 가지신 분들에 대한 인식이 좋아, 어디를 가는 차별이나 어려움 없이 여행을 즐길 수 있었습니다. 그저 "이들은 시각장애인입니다" 라고 말하면, 만나는 모든 이들이 도와주려 했습니다. 이번 여행에서 만난 모든 분들께 진심으로 감사의 마음을 전합니다.
이번 동행은 저에게 많은 것을 느끼고 배울 수 있는 소중한 시간이었습니다. 몸은 좀 피곤해도 아주 값지고 감사한 하루하루였습니다.
Recently, I had the unique pleasure of spending several days with special visitors from South Korea. They were two couples, each navigating the world without the full use of their sight, and i was tasked with guiding them through the vibrant city of Sydney. Embarking on this journey. I found myself pondering. 'Can visually impaired indivisuals enjoy tourism just like anyone else?' it was a revelation to see that despite their inability to see, these four indiviauals could touch, feel, and experience their surrounding in profound ways.
Two of them were completely blind, while the other two had low vision, able to barely distinguish shapes and lights. Among them, Min-Gyu had the best ability to discern shapes and led the way, with the rest relying on each other and following his lead. My role was to guide them from the front, ensuring Min-Gyu and the others could safely navigate their path.
As expected, their travel experience was entirely different from a typical tourist's journey. Visiting beautiful beaches, they first relished the fresh air and fine sand under their feet. Before tasting food, i would describe each menu item in detail. And while walking, i had to notify them of any slight obstacles in our path - this was a whole new kind of travel.
What drove them to undertake such travels? Most had acquired their visual impairments later in life and hadn't traveled much when they could see. However, after losing their sight, they found they had more time to travel and discovered immense joy in a trip to Japan they had taken together. This spurred them to make it their mission to travel to new country each year, with Sydney, Australia, being their lates adventure.
Their faith and trust in navigating an unseen world mirrored the spiritual journey of following an unseen Lord, from which i drew profound inspiration. A pastor accompanying us shared a poignant message from 2 Corinthians 5:7 - "We live by faith, not by sight, " resonating deeply with our experience.
Our experience in Australalia was also incredibly positive. Thanks to the country's awareness and accommodation for disabilities, we could enjoy our travels without facing discrimination or difficuluties. Simply mentioning "They are visually impaired" prompted everyone we met to offer their help. i am sincerely grateful to everyone we encountered on this trip.
This journey was a valuable time for me to learn and feel so much. Through it was physically titing, each day was immeasurably rewarding and filled with gratitude.
